Come with your family to hear the exciting story of how an ordinary girl in Hong Kong changed the lives of thousands and more! Dr. Joyce Samoutou-Wong, an alumna of DGS, will share with us the surreal adventures in Africa - from the Samoutou's chopping down a tree to make a wooden license plate, to a blind patient visiting the clinic by traveling a week through the depths of the forest and rivers. As a highly sought-after speaker, Joyce and Henri hope to share with you how New Sight Eye Care Center changed and transformed lives, as well as their ambitious vision for New Sight for the next five years; most important of all, Joyce and Henri hope to inspire and motivate you, your children and your family - that we can all make a difference and make this world a better place.

    New Sight & Joyce

“We are passionate about transforming lives by giving the priceless gift of sight.”

    - Joyce and Henri Samoutou

New Sight Eye Care (“New Sight”, registered charity number 1144893) was officially established in 2012 by Joyce and Henri Samoutou to provide comprehensive non-profit eye services including consultations, glasses, medical and surgical treatments, as well as free screening and community eye education in villages in the Republic of Congo.

Prior to the establishment of New Sight, Joyce and Henri relocated from the UK to develop a non-profit eye centre in a missionary hospital in the rainforest of Gabon in 2006. This, in Joyce’s words, was “ a realization of a dream” but also an eye-opener to the enduring hardships that she faced. The eye centre has since become self-sufficient and continues to help around 6,000 patients a year. With this experience, Joyce and Henri established New Sight, and together with their three young children, relocated to northern Republic of Congo to pioneer the first and only non-profit eye surgical centre in 2012 to help patients who would otherwise lack access to appropriate eye care.

In 2015 alone, New Sight has screened 815 patients and completed 1616 consultations.

    Joyce Samoutou-Wong

Dr. Joyce Samoutou-Wong, BSc (Hons) MBChB DRCOG DTMH MRCGP, a Hong Kong native, and her husband Henri are the founding directors of the charity New Sight Eye Care, and the 2012 winners of the international Excellence in Ophthalmology Vision award.

Joyce is a recipient of the Hong Kong Outstanding Students' Award and graduated from Diocesan Girls' School (DGS) before winning a full scholarship to study at the United World College of the Atlantic in the UK. She then read medicine at the University of Edinburgh, which was followed by a stint as a visiting fellow at Harvard University. She has been involved in several humanitarian projects across the globe, including running a mobile clinic and creating a successful first aid program along the ancient Silk Road in Uzbekistan.

An inspirational and sought-after speaker known for her sincerity and natural ability to make the audience both laugh and cry, Joyce has been invited to speak in several countries including Singapore, USA, UK, HK to audiences such as the Royal Geographic Society and Harvard Club. The meaningful work of Joyce and Henri has been featured in the BBC and South China Morning Post, and was the subject of a documentary series by Cable TV.
